Bug Description

Machine was running 12.04 LTS and worked fine, did not have any prior VirtualBox crashes.

After upgrading to 14.04 LTS, the machine consistently locks up about 10-20 minutes after starting Virtualbox and running a Windows 8.1 VM.

The symptons are system load goes really high, machine becomes unresponsive in GUI. I can change to a plain text shell, but then even a reboot command will not work. Have to hard reset the machine.

It is possible the issue is triggered by virtualbox when using a btrfs backend. After the system hung up, I looked at the syslog and saw these messages:

The problem is definitively the combination of Virtualbox and btrfs. I backed up my data, reformatted the file system where the virtualbox vms live using ext4 and the system has not crashed for 24+ hours now, whereas with btrfs it would crash within 20 minutes.
