Autofs + sshfs fails to mount after upgrade to Natty

Bug Description
I recently upgraded from Maverick to Natty and my SSHFS automount map stopped working. I can manually mount servers using both sshfs and mount (with fstype fuse), but automount seems not even to register that a request for a particular location has been made. In addition, an attempt to use a USB stick on sdd to debug the issue results in the same behavior - namely no activity registered. It is as if the communication between kernel and autofs was broken.
