I still observe the behavior described in the initial posting.
Probably, the problem is not related to usplash. I will update bug description shortly. |

I observe the problem on a pretty common hardware (Intel Centrino Duo platform). My machine is Dell Inspiron 640m: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron640m
To start the session it helps to disable splash. |

With the enabled "splash" option the behavior of the system seem to vary from boot to boot although in most cases final result is the black screen instead of GDM login screen. |
