ushare reports eth1 as down yet is working just fine

when I run ushare I get this
ushare -dc ushare
Interface eth1 is down.
Recheck uShare's configuration and try again !

yet ushare is working just fine ie I can telnet on other machine to it's listening ports and they connect and give me uShare (1.1a) (Built Feb 15 2008)

I can confirm I have the same problem with eth0
