Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I am upgrading to lucid (alpha): update-manager -d.

0) It is not posssible to mark, cut and paste text form the "Distribution Upgrade" dialogue box (to paste it to a bug report without typo mistakes).

1) Phase "Setting new software channels" took some minutes but the "Terminal" arrow in bottom was disabled so the user did not know what was going on. There should be a possibility to view details, e.g. "backuping /etc/apt/sources.list", "replacing 'karmic' for 'lucid' in /etc/apt/sources.list", etc.

2) Phase "Getting new packages" has the "Terminal" arrow also disabled! There should be possibility to view which package is just downloaded. There should also be a possibility to save (complete) list of needed packages (or to generate a wget script) for download them on a computer with higher download sped. There should also be an easy possibility (e.g. button) to let the update-manager use such downloaded packages on usb stick, cd/dvd-rom, (un)mounted iso image.

3) The update manager should ask for an occasional alternative source than the Internet such as usb stick, cd/dvd-rom, (un)mounted iso image with packages so the user must not burn the downloaded image or to mount the image and mainly search for how to run the upgrade from the mounted image (cdromupgrade). There should be also a command line option for using local stored packages/images (like --scan in jigdo-lite).

4) The cdromupgrade should ask about to download packages from the Internet and do a (partial) upgrade in case of negative answer. It asks for newest packages but still downloads other packages from the Internet when negative answer.

5) There is a problem with "incompatible stripping characters" in cdromupgrade:

root@hajajov:/mnt/lucid-dvd# ./cdromupgrade
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names

I'm getting this and then total failure to upgrade, even though I specified NOT to download any packages or use the internet.
