Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

The update notifier (in KDE) told me that Karmic was available, but when I started upgrading it failed. It seem like the reason was that the files have not yet reached the mirror I use.

Jarl, could you try again in a few days? It is unfortunate that we cannot ensure that all mirrors are updated in perfect synchronization, so sometimes a few of these temporary glitches happen. Luckily they are not very frequent. I agree that it's annoying, though.

It seems that the mirror is ready now.

What I expected is that I was not notified until MY mirror is completely updated, that's what I see as the real problem. I would rather have that notification a few hours later, as long as I could trust when it finally arrived.

Thanks for the bug report. As explained, we have no control over mirrors as they are hosted by 3rd parties.

Update manager did notify you about the update being available, which was correct. It's just that your mirror wasn't up to date.

This bug is quite old now, have you had any further issues with that mirror since first reporting the bug?

The analysis is most likely correct. But that does not resolve the problem. The problem being ubuntu configured to use a mirror (like http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/...) and update manager notifies the user that an upgrade is available before it reaches the configured mirror (http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/...)

So what kind of information do you need? The problem is most likely reproducible with the following steps:
1. Configure your ubuntu to use mirror site (like http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/...)
2. Configure your update manager (KPackageKit) to check for updates hourly.
3. Let the computer stay turned on the day a new release is released and observe.
4. As soon as the update manager notifies you of a new release, choose to upgrade your ubuntu.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a duplicate of bug #228247, so it is being marked as such. Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.

The bug I'm marking this a duplicate is not exactly the same thing, but these both have the same root cause: the release update notification in update-manager appears when the metarelease file hosted on changelogs.ubuntu.com is updated with the new info, but you can only update, when your mirror has been updated to contain the latest version. The other bug is about moving the metarelease file a place where it can be mirrored/carried with the mirrors, that way you will only see the update notification when the mirror you are using is updated, not when the main server is updated.
