Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hello!

On an up-to-date Intrepid, update-manager is telling me this:

> The list of changes is not available yet.
>
> Please use http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/2.14.3-0ubuntu2/+changelog
> until the changes become available or try again later.

This is a bit silly: visiting that link does show the list of changes, so "[it's] not available yet" is a false statement. At the very list the wording of the message should be changed. At best, update-manager should try to fetch that page itself, and only if that fails it should display a "not available" message.

In addition: this link seems to be blindly autogenerated, so there is no guarantee there's actually a changelog available (eg. updates from third party repos).

I was able to reproduce this in update-manager 0.132 on the development version of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid), so I removed the "Intrepid" label from the beginning of this bug.

summary: - [intrepid] update-manager acts silly with changes lists

What wording do you suggest ?

@Jean-Baptiste: Ideally, the update manager should actually retrieve the link it's proposing and determine if it contains the changes list. Then either display that or say it's not available.

If the determination can't be done it could say something like this:

# The list of changes could not be automatically retrieved.
# It might be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/2.14.3-0ubuntu2/+changelog

Which is at least self-consistent.

Although even in that case it should try to retrieve the URL, and either definitely say that it's not available (if the URL causes an error or it's empty), or display the contents saying “The list of changes cannot be determined with certainty, but it might be this one: [text on next line]”. This will save the user having to switch to a browser page.

There might also be a “refresh” or “retry” button.
