Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
This is more a feature request rather than a bug (though it could be seen as a usability bug). It concerns mainly Gutsy as it's the development branch, but it applies to the other versions too.
Except for viewing and picking updates, everything the Update Manager does (installing and removing packages) is intrinsically slow and not at all urgent.
The Update Manager should do all the "real work" --- updating and removing packages, loading the package list and building the dependency tree, etc --- in a low-priority (not idle, just lower than interactive), with only the interface running interactively. Especially the updates should be very easy to do with lower priority, because they're run by dpkg (or apt-get, I'm not sure), but even reading the package list should be done the same way (with care to keep the interface interactive).
The current behavior can turn even a dual-core machine unresponsive for some time.

I can confirm this behavior. I have a Intel core Duo 1.8 Ghz and 1GB RAM. Still my computer gets unbeliveable sow for about 10 seconds eveytime there is new updates.
