Thanks for reporting this issue.
I've never tried installing unity8- desktop- session- mir on an Ubuntu Gnome remix. I wonder if we have missed some dependency that is otherwise seeded on a standard Ubuntu distro.
As a start, could you please attach /var/log/ lightdm. log and we will see if it trying to pick up the unity8 configuration.
