Bug Description

Enabling auto log-in for a user causes a ubuntu unity session to be started when the operating system is booted.
The session has a "Log Out..." item on the pull-down menu item in the upper right corner.
When this command is used, the session is logged out, but there is no subsequent auto log-in.

Consequently, remote access by VNC (vinagre/vino) ceases.

This problem has been around for several releases, but is definately present for the one below:

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release: 12.04

This problem is also present in the Ubuntu 12.10 Release.

This problem is made more serious because of several other bugs that I've encountered for which my only available workaround is to logout. Because of the problem reported here, I have to not only logout, but go through an entire reboot, because I have no way to remotely execute (eg via VNC) a logout followed by a login.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I have found a workaround less horrible than a reboot: use the shell command "sudo service lightdm restart" which allows the auto-login to operate again, so a remote vnc access can be re-established. If you have a current interactive session, it will be be killed (i.e. auto-logout), so save your work as much as possible before doing it.

Do you expect it to automatically log in without user interaction? It intentionally does not automatically log back in.

Bug 1396824 "X server crash from autologin session returns to greeter, not autologin session" is related.

If the VNC server should survive a login or a logout it needs to run as root. Solutions are shown on http://askubuntu.com/questions/229989/how-to-setup-x11vnc-to-access-with-graphical-login-screen/528469#528469 and on http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/VNC#x11vnc .
