Super key does not open dash after switching to a workspace with no windows

Bug Description

After switching to a workspace that contains no windows, pressing the Super key does not open the dash, even if I switch back to a workspace with windows. This effect lasts until the window focus is changed by clicking or using the window switcher. A screencast including xev output is attached.

I've seen that happen, when nautilus has crashed, and is not there to provide the 'desktop' window. Nautilus has had a bunch of crashing problems in quantal, lately.

Are you experiencing any nautilus crashes? When you go to the empty desktop, does a right-click on the desktop bring up a menu? If it doesn't, nautilus has crashed.

That's probably it. I created the screencast at 8:37 PDT and ps says my current nautilus instance was started at 10:25 PDT. I'm not able to reproduce the problem now unless I manually kill nautilus.

So you could consider this a dupe of whatever nautilus crash it might be, or close this report. Or we could ask the Unity devs if they'd consider it a bug itself, that nautilus' failure affects Unity this way. I'm not sure if they'd try to fix that, or say "nautilus has to work for the desktop to function properly."

I'll keep things simple and assume this will go away quietly when Nautilus is fixed. Thanks for taking the time to explain that.
