Especially one would expect a simple fallback to the freedesktop thumbnail specs:
Imagine a file that is (as of now) not supported by Unity Previews: "Untitled.skp".
This file does have a thumbnail in ~/.cache/
It even has a large thumbnail in ~/.cache/
Although the dash can't make a preview itself, it should use the existing large image instead of a generic file format icon.
