unity-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in up_exported_daemon_get_lid_is_closed()

when i log in the unity launcher is missing and taskbar is missing and the titlebars in apps are missing.

tried open terminal and typed unity
tried reinstalling nvidia driver
tried restarting lightdm
