2011-06-23 13:40:11 Garrett Sides description It's happened before (since Natty was released) where the CPU fan would spin up and the CPU usage would rise (as I could see on Syspeek) and never come back down, in the past I thought it was from my meddling with Plymouth and Kernel setting, but on this Natty install neither of those things have been done. Now my CPU idles at 30-60% even with no other programs running, and the boot time has increased dramatically along with this problem. I ran top -n 1 | head -n 12 to look at the processes and their usage, which is what lead me to udev and here's the output: top - 09:17:27 up 37 min, 2 users, load average: 0.81, 1.02, 1.01 Tasks: 276 total, 2 running, 271 sleeping, 0 stopped, 3 zombie Cpu(s): 28.2%us, 9.6%sy, 0.9%ni, 55.7%id, 5.3%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.3%si, 0.0%st Mem: 7935908k total, 2560884k used, 5375024k free, 156648k buffers Swap: 8117244k total, 0k used, 8117244k free, 881148k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 570 root 16 -4 150m 130m 336 S 62 1.7 12:20.77 udevd 22597 garrett 20 0 159m 5076 3076 S 23 0.1 6:35.66 gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor 585 root 18 -2 21604 1040 352 S 8 0.0 2:32.60 udevd 22616 root 20 0 134m 5236 3120 S 6 0.1 2:49.20 udisks-daemon 23521 garrett 20 0 176m 8460 5708 S 6 0.1 2:22.04 gdu-notification-daemon Ubuntu release: Natty Udev version: 167-0ubuntu3 I expect the CPU to idle around 1-3% like it does before this bug and boot-up time to be around 20-30 seconds...but once this starts the CPU goes up to 30-60% as stated earlier and boot times go into the minute-and-a-half range ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: udev 167-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx Architecture: amd64 Date: Thu Jun 23 09:20:57 2011 EcryptfsInUse: Yes ExecutablePath: /sbin/udevd InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Release amd64 (20110427.1) MachineType: Gateway DX4300 ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=5fbe7f6c-4ae2-4959-b049-c135e717a12b ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: udev UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 04/24/2009 dmi.bios.vendor: American Megatrends Inc. dmi.bios.version: P01-A1 dmi.board.asset.tag: To Be Filled By O.E.M. dmi.board.name: RS780 dmi.board.vendor: Gateway dmi.board.version: Rev 1.0 dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.chassis.vendor: Gateway dmi.chassis.version: 1.0 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAmericanMegatrendsInc.:bvrP01-A1:bd04/24/2009:svnGateway:pnDX4300:pvrP01-A1:rvnGateway:rnRS780:rvrRev1.0:cvnGateway:ct3:cvr1.0: dmi.product.name: DX4300 dmi.product.version: P01-A1 dmi.sys.vendor: Gateway It's happened before (since Natty was released) where the CPU fan would spin up and the CPU usage would rise (as I could see on Syspeek) and never come back down, in the past I thought it was from my meddling with Plymouth and Kernel setting, but on this Natty install neither of those things have been done.
