FN + up and down key should UP and DOWN the LCD brightness, but it does not occur. When I press the keys, there is a notification baloon, but nothing happens with brightness. The notification baloon scale does not move. I mean, if I UP and DOWN the sound, for example, the notification baloon scales move left or right, depending on the action, but, with brightness, scale does not move (and, sure, as i said, LCD brigthness does not UP or DOWN).

Not successfull to get the key codes. So, using Keyboard Shortcuts, I got the values above:

XF86MonBrigthnessDown - pressed FN + Down
XF86MonBrigthnessUP - pressed FN + UP

If it was working correct, brightness should UP and DOWN accordingly.

I can confirm this bug on my LG R580 running Karmic. If I press FN + Down, the brightness is lowered one level; if pressed again, the birghtness is instead raised a level. Subsequent pressings of FN + Down will continue to raise, then lower, the brightness.

FN + Up appears to work correctly.

Hi there,

I m using Ubuntu 10.10, and the problem still exist too.
I don't know if it helps but I noticed that there is nothing in the EDID file in the folder / file cat/proc/video/VGA1/LCD and brightness only changes from 100 to 90.

I have a Notebook LG R590-5100 (k.be52p1) and i have other problem:
Besides the problem with the brightness, I have problem with wireless rtl8191sevb that does not enable to "FN + F6" and still crashes the system.

I hope that these problems be solved.

I have an LG R590-5500 and I have the same issue since Ubuntu 10.04.
I am now using Ubuntu 11.04 with all updates, still the same problem.
I also installed all the BIOS updates for this machine. I remember that one BIOS update solved the same problem with new NVidia drivers in Windows 7.
The problem happens to me with the proprietary or without the proprietary NVidia drivers.
I think this problem is severe, as this drains the battery very fast and the level of brightness is so strong that I can only use Ubuntu with sunglasses. (or inside vmware in Windows, as the brightness control in Windows works and you can use Ubuntu comfortable.)

Workaround from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/803051 (tested on LG R590-5700 only):

1) install the nvidiabl module from https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl (Downloads > nvidiabl-dkms_0.69_all.deb);
2) add a line with 'nvidiabl' in /etc/modules;
3) add 'acpi_backlight=vendor' to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub;
4) run update-grub.

Read this issue if you have problems after reboot: https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl/issues/14
