Bug Description

The drag-left/right gestures to remove items or get a context menu on them are not obvious, we need to find a place to educate users about those, seeing as those get more and more usage across the phone.

This might be something for the initial shell demo, or maybe the SDK should have a "learning" mode the first few times a draggable item is displayed.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04
Package: qtdeclarative5-ubuntu-ui-toolkit-plugin 1.1.1364+15.04.20141209-0ubuntu2

I really like the idea of having some sort of "learning-mode". If a user navigates to any given (and populates) list item view, it would be great if one of the items could e.g bounce to indicate what is hidden behind it.

I'd rather have some hints than bouncing. You can have actions on both leading and trailing side, and bouncing each time you open a page with such a view, bouncing an item on both sides would be bad UX.

Perhaps a visual clue on the edges when the user taps on the component could indicate that there's something on those sides would do the job...

Sure, that's why I mentioned this to be temporary, to just get the user
aware and make them try it. I'm sure we can come up with a way to make
this non-jarring.

Problem with that is that tapping on such an item usually has an effect
already, could make the hint easily missed.

I agree with Zsombar on the hint. There has been a motion design task on the kanban board for month regarding this task.

I think Renato did something for the messaging or address book apps. Maybe that can help.

An other option is to include a description in the empty state of any given app. If the design is unified, it can be reused across platform and future apps.

The telephony apps will implement an interim solution until the final design is ready.

I think maybe an arrow, small dots or a small sneak peak may be better, if should provide the user with an affordance that they can swipe to reveal contextual type actions. On iOS I believe the arrow near the time stamp is indicative of this.
