I tired purging ppa's using sudo apt-get purge <package-name>.

After which the installation progressed all the way till "Installing the upgrades". Then I received another error as detailed below.

"Could not install '/var/cahce/apt/archives/dictionaries-common_1.27.2_all.deb

The upgrade will continue but the '/var/cahce/apt/archives/dictionaries-common_1.27.2_all.deb' package may not be in a working state. Please consider raising a bug'

unable to clean up mess surrounding './var/lib/ispell/RADME' before installing another version: Read-only file system'

At this point, I tried taking a screenshot but the Sreenshot app wasn't starting up. Neither Chrome nor Mozilla was starting up.

I hit "OK" after that but then I got another message saying the installation was not complete and it will roll back to the original state.

Then I received a message saying the rollback wasn't successful and the system may be unstable.

I restarted the system. During restart, I ended up on Busybox command line screen.

I ran "exit" command and then ran fsck /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root. Fixed all the issues. Then rebooted the system. I entered the password to crypt the hard drive. Post which the OS load seems to be stuck on a black screen with only mouse cursor and nothing else. The cursor seems to respond to input but nothing else happens.
