Bug Description

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

You seem to have both the kubuntu-desktop metapackage and the ubuntu-desktop metapackage installed. Having two metapackages installed can create a complicated upgrade for the release upgrader and this time it wasn't able to figure out the upgrade path. I'd suggest removing one of the metapackages and try the upgrade again. The messages I used to determine this appear in VarLogDistupgradeMainlog.txt:
2016-07-31 19:21:01,426 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2016-07-31 19:21:01,522 DEBUG Marking 'kubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2016-07-31 19:21:02,571 WARNING Can't mark 'kubuntu-desktop' for upgrade (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)
2016-07-31 19:21:02,572 DEBUG metapkg 'ubuntu-desktop' installed but marked_delete
2016-07-31 19:21:02,572 DEBUG metapkg 'ubuntu-desktop' installed but marked_delete
2016-07-31 19:21:02,752 DEBUG blacklist expr 'ubuntu-desktop$' matches 'ubuntu-desktop'
2016-07-31 19:21:02,752 DEBUG The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it's in the removal blacklist
