Bug Description
After a system restart and login using Unity desktop, the distro upgrade message displays. Selected upgrade.
Packages analysed and downloaded, but then within the second stage process "Setting new software channels", the "Can't install ubuntu-desktop" message is displayed and requests a bug/error log is recorded here.
I do have and normally use the Cinnamon desktop. This is still installed, though I logged in using Unity in effort to allow the upgrade (it has at least got as far as allowing reporting of this error). A similar issue occurred on upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10 and seemed to be caused by having Cinnamon installed that time.
As Cinnamon is such a popular desktop choice, I don't know why Canonical don't support this configuration during upgrades (if this is the problem cause) - or even officially release a Cinnamon Ubuntu variation (e.g. "Cibuntu").

We may want to add cinnamon-desktop to data/DistUpgrad e.cfg.
However, that probably won't help out your specific case as you don't have that package installed and I believe you should.
