I decided not to go with the 'default computer name' on the 'Who are you' page when trying an install of Natty. Any name I now try, even random text, reports "That name already exists on the network" and so I am prevented from moving forward.

With Natty amd64 20110324 I also see this warning ("That name already exists on the network."). I ignored it and choose something I wanted and I was able to continue the install normally.

I am in the middle of doing a fresh install, this time of the beta version of 11.04, and I find the bug still present.

If I make a change to the default computer name I am told that "That name already exists on the network" even if I type random text or even the computer name previously suggested by Ubiquity. Because this error is highlighted I am unable to move forward. When I hit the 'Back' button and then immediately move 'Forward' from there, the 'Computer name' is ticked as OK, even if this still contains some text of my own choosing. But, if I now alter this text, the same problem appears, I am told the "name already exists" and I cannot move forward, only back.

I'm installing Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 beta 1 in a VM, and it tells me "ubuntu" "already exists on the network". Unlike other people, "ubuntu2" works. Where is this information coming from? No computer on this network except some inactive VMs are called "ubuntu".

It's useful to know if any other computers have called themselves "ubuntu", but other machines on the network should _never_ be able to prevent the installation from proceeding. This is a denial of service flaw.

Same thing here installing Natty beta 1 (destkop 32 bit) on a VirtualBox virtual machine.

The name I typed not really existed on the network (I had only one PC connected).

When going to password textbox and typing, the message disappeared and I was able to go ahead.

Same problem on fresh install of beta 2 I am told computer name already in use I tried many long computer names all gave me the zame efror and I could not continue until I used a long string of random numbers as the name. Installing as a vmware vm from a iso of beta 2.
