Thanks for your report.

Apparently sda has an AHDI partition which could lead to a shift in the calculation of the partition indexes we use for ZFS.

My guess is that the machine has been booted in Legacy mode, in this mode disks up to 2TB are supported but on your setup sda is 8TB hence the numerical result out of range. To be confirmed.

Could you confirm that you booted in BIOS mode when the error occurred?
Can you try the installation again in UEFI and tell is you reproduce the issue?

I have the same problem when trying to install Ubuntu with ZFS on 3 TB HDD (installer is createing GPT scheme).
I booted in BIOS mode and I can't try UEFI mode because my computer doesn't support it.

Installation on 750 GB works fine as it will create MBR scheme.

I can confirm that I get the same error, switched to UEFI, and the problem went away.

It would be very nice if there was a descriptive error message in this case--it was not easy to find the root cause.
