Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:

- With ubuntu 14.10 Desktop 64-bit already installed, try ro re-install it (from USB stick)
- Choose the language (English), continue and tick the two checkboxes (download updates while installing and install the 3rd party software), continue
- it remains there indefinitely, with the "wait" cursor

(I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to login and submit the bug report)

What I have tried to fix the issue:
- Because it was a re-installation in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7, I booted Windows 7 and from Windows deleted the two volumes previously used by Ubuntu (/ and swap), and tried again to install ubuntu, reproducing the same issue as before.
- Started ubuntu from the USB stick (without installation) and formatted the now free space on disk as two ubuntu partitions (approx 40 GB and 8 GB respectively); then tried ubuntu installation again, reproducing the same issue as before.

Workaround:
- unchecked download updates while installing and install the 3rd party software, and installation continued correctly.

I am attaching a /var/log/syslog collected after reproducing the issue and before reboot, but I can find no /var/log/partman.

I have the same issue, also installing alongside Windows 7. I did `ps axjf' and noticed it was stuck running `ntfsresize -f -i /dev/sda2', which was called by a partman script. I assume the script was trying to determine the minimum size of the Windows partition to give an option to resize it. The path to the script on the LiveCD was:

/lib/partman/automatically_partition/10resize_use_free/option

My workaround was the remove the part of the partman script responsible for calling ntfsresize, since I already had my disks prepartitioned. Ubiquity worked fine after that, and it was able to automatically install alongside Windows 7.

I'm probably going to post about this in the Ubiquity package bug tracker. ntfsresize is really slow on real world NTFS file systems and shouldn't be being used by Ubiquity in such a way unless requested by the user.

Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that "UbiquitySyslog.txt" was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, since this was not one I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the definition of a patch. You can learn more about what qualifies as a patch at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Patches. Thanks!

This remains a problem with the 15.10 installer. The workaround still applies.

Still seems to be a problem with xenial - ubiquity seems to hang after selecting "install third party software" and clicking continue.

From `ps`ing and `strace`ing it looks like ubiquity is waiting for Intel-microcode and nvidia-340 to be installed, and that eventually succeeds (which takes an amount of time between annoying and exasperating depending on the speed of your network) but there is no progress dialog and the user experience suffers.

@Felipe; if it crashed, it's not this bug. Please file your own new bug so we can have a look and fix it.

This depends highly on the system that runs the installer (some needs drivers, others don't), and on the speed of the network (very slow network will take a while to retrieve firmwares).

There isn't much we can do about the fact that this needs to be retrieved, however we can improve on the design and possibly show a progress bar there.

Triaging, but this certainly doesn't quality as "Critical".
