Recently I've changed HW from Athlon Barton 2500/GForce 7600 to Athlon II X2 250 /Radeon HD 4200 and I've done fresh Ubuntu 10.04 installation. On mainboar there's integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 chip, so I've installed proprietary drivers, from Ubuntu SW manager (ver. 8.723.1-0ubuntu4), but I've seen high CPU usage, as below:
PID USER PRI NI VIRT RES SHR S CPU% MEM% TIME+ Command
1154 root 20 0 181M 68164 36612 S 84.0 3.3 37:04.28 /usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/
1350 tv 20 0 40324 14436 9136 S 45.0 0.7 21:26.77 /usr/bin/tvtime
Also I see some frames are dropped, and video is not running smooth.
Then I decided to install newer driver (ver.8.741) from ATI site using ati installer. But this didn't solve problem.
I've seen similar problems from year 2006, then never nv drivers (different HW - nvidia graphics card) solved the problem.
BR,
Krzysztof
