tuxonice userui is not working

The issue has two root causes:
1. the tuxoniceui_usplash needs a fix to add two fade_logo calls. This is already fixed in the tuxonice-userui SVN.
2. the pm-utils sleep.d hook 98-smart-kernel-video disables changing the VT. To get it work with TOI, you need to enable it by commenting out one line.

Please find a debdiff to fix the issue in karmic.

I don't know how to use debdiff to solve the problem. Will this patch be applied on official release?

Now I have figured out how to apply the debdiff and here is my report:

In my karmic installation of pm-utils there is no 98-smart-kernel-video file in /etc/pm/sleep.d. There are only two files: 10_grub-common and 10_unattended-upgrades-hibernate and a symlink named action_wpa. I have downloaded pm-utils-1.2.5.zip from the pm-utils git repository and copied all the files from the archives pm/sleep.d directory in my /etc/pm/sleep.d directory and applied your patch for 98-smart-kernel-video.

After that I have applied the debdiff and I have made new tuxonice-userui package and installed it.

Now tuxonice-useui is showing but sometimes it is almost completely faded out so that I can't see almost anything, only if I bring my LCD screen in the distance of about 2 cm to my eyes I can see that status is reported. Could it be somehow changed so that usplash screen remains in full saturated white color when tuxonice is performing hibernate and restore?

I noticed another problem. If I set EnableEscape to yes in tuxonice.conf I still can't stop hibernation process by pressing esc key during hibernation is processed. Keybord seems not to be working during hibernation process.

Please find attached an updated debdiff to also add a pm-utils hook to remove the no-chvt hook.

SkullBurner: What versions of TuxOnice (ie the kernel patch) and of userui are you using?

Whoopie: Is the chvt part of the debdiff needed for text userui? I'm considering adding it to the tuxonice.net svn repository.

I am using the Karmic Kernel from tuxonice ubuntu repository version is 2.6.31-18.54+tuxonice1. I use tuxonice-userui version 1.0+svn1081-0ubuntu1~karmic1. I still can't use keyboard during hibernation process. For me tuxonice-userui was also not working in textmode until I have applied the pm-utils hook.

I'm using Ubuntu Karmic and pressing Escape while hibernating does not work here either. I need to use the kernel option "nomodeset" in grub to deactivate KMS for tuxoniceui-text to work. Using tuxoniceui-usplash only shows a black screen but hibernating works. I also have to remove "splash" from the kernel options for resuming to work from X. Otherwise, I get a black screen after resume, no mouse, no keyboard response, no switching to console and I have to reset.

I have an onboard intel graphics card in my laptop. The same problems occurs with different tuxonice enabled Ubuntu kernels (2.6.31-18.54+tuxonice1, and various others with text or usplash as default), with both, tuxonice version 3.0.1 and 3.0.99.44 and with tuxonice-userui versions 1.0-1 and 1.0+svn1081-0ubuntu1~karmic1.

I also tried to copy the missing files into pm/sleep.d (using http://pm-utils.freedesktop.org/releases/pm-utils-1.2.6.1.tar.gz) and removed all "add_parameter --quirk-no-chvt" lines in 98-smart-kernel-video. Resume using tuxoniceui-usplash with the kernel option splash still does not work.

Note that I also applied the instructions posted by Whoopie in April 2009 on the tuxonice-devel mailing list to generate the initrd.

How can I get more debug information or any idea what cases this problem and what else I could try?

@Martin: could you test the tuxonice-userui from my PPA to see if it works?

Thanks Whoopie! With the version of your PPA works. No black screen hangs on resume and tuxoniceui-usplash works as well. There are just some minor issues:

* pressing "Escape" during hibernation still does not work (is this an userui issue?)

* on resume, I guess before tuxoniceui_usplash takes over, the splash image is a bit scrambled and instead of the right-left-right moving progress bar, the progress bar goes backward, just as during hibernation

* in some cases, it is not switched back to X, so I still see the tuxonice debug_info output, but I can switch to X using Ctrl-Alt-F7

* in some cases, /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video hangs at the command "chvt 7", so for example, the network manager does not reconnect. after switching to console and back (Ctrl-Atl-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F7) /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video finishes

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

1. The usplash issue only affects 1.0-1 since usplash was removed in newer versions.

2. The chvt issue is a pm-utils bug that is also reported here: https://bugs.debian.org/732948
Anyway since version 1.1+dfsg1.gc3bdd83-1, tuxonice-userui takes care of changing VT if needed.

To sum up, this bug does not affect Utopic Unicorn.

karmic has seen the end of its life and is no longer receiving any updates. Marking the karmic task for this ticket as "Won't Fix".
