Seems like the package "ttf-indic-fonts" requires Java to be installed and I dont have it installed on my machine.

Probably this packages' metadata should be updated to include the dependency on java.

Remove the package let me resume updates normally:

Why is this installed by default ? My locale is nowhere near Indian.

The rm_conffile function and the PKG variable are missing in the preinst script.

Proposing a debdiff to fix this bug:

Look at the error message, you are still trying to install version 0.5.8ubuntu1
The fix is in 0.5.8ubuntu2.

Still receiving error message upon attempting to update.

Error has not been fixed as stated. Checked for new updates, error still occurs. No 0.5.8ubuntu2 found in re-check of update. Still listed as 0.5.8ubuntu_1

Had the same issue reported on bug# 563947 as a duplicate by accident. Noted the following output from an 'apt-get upgrade'

Just got minutes ago the new version 1:0.5.8ubuntu2 while updating my system. Works for me for updating from 1:0.5.4ubuntu2:

Preparing to replace ttf-indic-fonts-core 1:0.5.4ubuntu2 (using .../ttf-indic-fonts-core_1%3a0.5.8ubuntu2_all.deb) ...
Updating fontconfig cache for /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-indic-fonts-core /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-malayalam-fonts
[...]

Previously I had the same problem as others with version 1:0.5.8ubuntu1.

Not all mirrors do yet have the package. But the GB mirror has it:
$ LANG=C apt-cache policy ttf-indic-fonts

The package ttf-indic-fonts-core 3a0.5.8ubuntu 1_all.deb is still in the update and cuases trouble.

The new pre inst srcipt causes new trouble.

i get this error-message:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/ttf-fonts-core_1%3a0.5.8ubuntu1_all.deb: subprocess returned the error code 127

Please fix rhis up

go to your updater in System->preferences->Update-manager. There you will find the new package. This Bug is fixed up, but with the thunderbird-packages, there is at the moment the error 404- not found, which says, that this is still not on the update-servers it seems.

The bug is fixed. It takes time for the fixed packages to get built and distributed. Further comments on the bug won't affect that. Please just be patient. All more comments are going to do is needlessly distract people from bugs that still need fixing.
