see /etc/default/thttpd

#
# This file is read by the thttpd init script.

#
# If you wish thttpd to start, globally, the change ENABLED to "yes"
# (was NO):
ENABLED=yes

great, that worked, but i've got to ask...why was the default behavior changed? presumably if i installed thttpd i'd want it to start?

When I run
/etc/init.d/thttpd
nothing happens

But when I run "thttpd" as a run, server runs.

Why?

Solved:

by default /etc/default/thttpd has ENABLED=No. Put ENABLED=yes and then you could to /etc/init.d/thttpd {start, stop, ...}

ENABLED=yes worked for me as well.

But it's a shame that /usr/sbin/thttpd returns error code 0 without starting.

It should at least say: "sorry, ENABLED was set to NO, edit /etc/default/httpd".

Is there a reason why thttpd is not enabled by default just like any other server than you can install in Ubuntu? This is completely confusing for first time users. The already mentioned non-verbosity of this behaviour makes this problem even worse.

Setting this bug to "confirmed" since it really looks like a bug!

Changed in thttpd (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed
