Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

this happened after the latest updates installed for ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which also changed the appearance of the chat window (in a nice way I should say...) If a user writes a long message, this message does not appear on my chat window. Moreover the next messages coming after that, even if they are sent by the other user, they appear to be sent by me.

The package i'm using is 2.30.1-0ubuntu1.

Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Yes it is reproducible. All you have to do is to say to another user to write a long message to you, let's say about three lines long... you should see the typing image next to the user's name but the message will never be received.

Thanks for your response.

I dont know exactly but there is a limit for msn message to be delivered if the characters exceed that limit the message is not delivered and no body is notified that message wont be sent due to its length. is the other user using empathy too? if so then its a known bug

unfortunately i'm the only one who uses empathy... When I found out that I wasn't receiving long messages, I tried to reproduce it with users that use Windows Live Messenger and aMSN. The first one who uses Windows Live Messenger owns a yahoo account... I hope all this extra information might help a little...

I'm having a very similar problem with Empathy on Lucid right now.
Realized that a long message sent by others to me, appear in the preview upper-right-side translucid popup, but wont show on the chat window at all.
It is not recognized as an error by the debug tool. Instead it leads me to the log of the chat, where the message appears correctly.
One thing to note is, there is a pattern for msgs that does not appear or seems to have been received:
They are the ones with a breakline between the start and the end of the tag message.

What you need to do is write down good instructions on how to reproduce.
You need to figure out whether this is a protocol-specific issue (for example, it happens just with MSN clients sending to empathy) or a generic issue with all protocols.

dicorfu, try asking at forum.ubuntu-gr.org for help to diagnose, or the ubuntu-gr mailing list.

It appears that there might be some limit to the size of the text box of the chat.

Empathy bugs are recorded at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=empathy
A quick look at the chat messages did not show something relevant to MSN.
You can try to search a bit more.
