Bug Description

With an up to date (as of 20 Sept) Oneiric beta, I am receiving several error/warning notifications when I try to print. Printing actually works - that's not the issue. But on the way to a successful printing, I see

- "Printer may not be connected" warning message
- "Printer error - cups-remote-processing" error message

I am running an upgrade from 11.04, with the same printers. Prior to the upgrade I didn't receive either of these messages, and feel this is a regression.

affects: cups (Ubuntu) → system-config-printer (Ubuntu)

The message "Printer may not be connected" is generated by gnome-settings-daemon and handled in bug 842768 (patch submitted). The message "Printer error - cups-remote-processing" is generated by system-config-printer (job viewer applet) and I have uploaded a package with the notification being suppressed (real fix would be to improve the messages, but we are after UI string freeze). The system-config-printer package with the messages suppressed is waiting in the approval queue due to beta2 freeze. It will make it into the archives shortly after the release of beta2 on Thursday.

This bug was fixed in the package system-config-printer - 1.3.6+20110831-0ubuntu8

---------------
system-config-printer (1.3.6+20110831-0ubuntu8) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/47_suppress-misleading-notifications.patch:
Suppress notification messages for the new "cups-remote-..." state
reasons of CUPS 1.5.x. As they do not have human-readable text, the
notifications look like errors, which is misleading (LP: #855379).
NOTE: This patch is not intended for upstream. It is only a workaround,
the real patch is updating the message list and improving the wording.

indicator-printers is handling user notifications in precise, and it doesn't notify for cups-remote-processing.

Just got this problem with Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, up to date on 2012/09/20 with version 1.3.8+20120201-0ubuntu8.1 of system-config-printer.

The misleading error message was "Printer error - cups-remote-processing".

Specifically, following is what is installed on my machine:

ii system-config-printer-common 1.3.8+20120201-0ubuntu8.1 Printer configuration GUI
ii system-config-printer-gnome 1.3.8+20120201-0ubuntu8.1 Printer configuration GUI
ii system-config-printer-udev 1.3.8+20120201-0ubuntu8.1 Printer auto-configuration facility based on udev

Same here, in an up-to-date and standard Unity 12.04/AMD64, cups remote processing says "printer error" but it works correctly anyway.

My printer is connected to a 10.04 server while my client is 12.04. If the problem is on the server side but no patch is issued for 10.04, it will continue to persist on my client. Please inform us if the problem is on the client side or server side.

The Precise Pangolin has reached end of life, so this bug will not be fixed for that release
