Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

On 7.10 I have no proxy set in synaptic package manager (under Settings, Preferences, Network) but do have a proxy set at the OS/GUI level (under System, Preferences, Network Proxy) the machine I've just upgraded to 8.4 is and was set the same but synaptic times out, unless I configure the proxy in synaptic it's self. If i do that it works but its a change in behavior?

The language used in the Bug description is not very clear, but I think the person that made the report is complaining about the same thing as I am.

At work I use Ubuntu, I have to access the Internet behind a corporate firewall. So I configured the proxy and the username/password for it in Gnome Network Proxy Dialog. I usually use aptitude for package management, and it reads the proxy information correctly. It's a bit of a pain in the ass having to define the proxy again in Synaptic's Settings for it to work.

The same issue here (although it never worked in Gutsy either for me), synaptic does not use the gnome proxy settings.

In general proxy configuration has improved in Hardy but synaptic (and update-manager, add/remove, etc.) should use the Gnome proxy configuration.
