Bug Description

After recent upgrade (0.83) I noticed that quick search box is missing Synaptic toolbar on Xenial. For comparison see this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/xYtBgyZ.png

As per several comments below installing 'apt-xapian-index' enables the Quick filter search box.

Note to dev/maintainer: set 'apt-xapian-index' as 'recommend', not 'suggest' as it is now

I do not see a good reason to remove the Quick Search function in Synaptic. I think it is essential.
As of version 0.83, the Quick Search 'apt-xapian-index' is set to 'suggest' instead of 'recommend' as it used to.

Please change it back. Everybody likes the quick search function.

I know it is easy to fix by manually installing 'apt-xapian-index', but the first impression is half-baked software.

Quick Search is still missing in ubuntu 18.04.

Using version 0.90.2 in impish I see that there has been no change in recent releases.

The title of this bug needs amending as the "Quick filter" box isn't missing. It hasn't been enabled in a default installation of synaptic by also installing 'apt-xapian-index' as per comments #2 and #4.

The dependencies of the synaptic package need changing. No changes are needed to the synaptic application itself.
