Bug Description
Sometimes it happens that you accidentially click on a wrong application launcher in the menu or panel, it always annoyed me that you then have to wait until the application is started to close it again.
It would be nice if hitting the ESC key while the busy cursor is shown would stop the application from starting up immediately in such a case.

It is a very interesting proposal, although not really a papercut. It is a bigger design decision that we could consider. My call would be to use a standard key combo for closing applications (Ctrl+Q), rather than ESC.
