Hello

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I don't understand which package doesn't work for you. I mean, are you talking about gnome-sound-recorder or simply sound-recorder? I suppose that you encountered this problem while using gnome-sound-recorder because sound-recorder doesn't allow you to set the 'CD Quality, Lossless' audio profile otherwise gnome-sound-recorder provides this option.

Would you please specify:

1. which steps you took that caused you to encounter the problem
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thanks!

could you try the same with a new user created on your system? that's maybe a broken user setup.

I also have this problem in ubuntu 9.10 karmic
uname -r
2.6.31-17-generic
The steps that caused the problem for me was:
1. Uninstall pulse audio; sudo apt-get remove gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio vlc-plugin-pulse pulseaudio
2. apt-get advised to autoremove other packages that were no longer needed from dependencies in step 1. I did this
3. sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-alsa gnome-alsamixer
4. I restarted after this and logged in again
5 I noticed the sound preferences did not work anymore. (expected) so completely removed gnome-media in synaptic
6. I then realized gnome-media contained the gnome-sound-recorder, so reinstalled gnome-media
7. I think I logged out and back in
8. Opened sound recorder from Applications, Sound & Video, Sound Recorder
9 Selected record, lossless wave type
10. Clicked record button
Got the message "Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' wav profile. Please
verify its settings. You may be missing the plug-ins.
The idea in removing pulse audio is related to Bug #405945
It seemed to at least partially solve the problem for that bug.
I have just reinstalled pulee audio with the command:
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop and sound recorder does not give any error message now but still wont record anything (related to Bug #405945)
So with me the bug seems to be caused by uninstalling pulse audio, installing gstreamer0.10-alsa and gnome-alsamixer.

I removed pulse audio again with command:
sudo apt-get purge gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio vlc-plugin-pulse pulseaudio
After this and a reboot sound recorder still not givng an error message like before: "Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' wav profile. Please
verify its settings. You may be missing the plug-ins.
but the microphone is not working as in Bug #405945.
It is probably not relevant what I reported here then. It must of been caused by removing to much previously when I removed pulse or when I removed gnome-media. Before when I reinstalled gnome-media the error still appeared though, but disappeared when I reinstalled pulse.

The same bug has returned again for me. All I have done is reboot into an older kernel: 2.6.31-16-generic. I was trying to see if the microphone and sound recorder worked in that but got the message: "Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' wav profile. Please
verify its settings. You may be missing the plug-ins".
That happened as-well immediately after the rebooting back into 2.6.31-17-generict but now again when I try it, just a few minutes later, I don't get the message. Of course the microphone still doesn't work.
So this seems a non repeatable bug with me.

I switched user to my other login. Opened System, Preferences, Multimedia systems selector, selected: OSS-Open sound system for the input and saw that it wasn't supported by a driver for input device, so went back to alsa microphone input for device. I then tried sound recorder but the error message returned: "Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' audio profile. Please verify its settings.
You may be missing the necessary plug-ins".
I then logged out of the user account back into my main user account and the message has returned again in that account. Probably if I wait a few minutes and try sound recorder again the message will not appear.

I think I have found exactly how to repeat the bug.
Since I have removed pulse audio and installed gstreamer0.10-alsa
1. System, Preferences. Multimedia Systems Selector
2. Default input plugin, alsa
3. Device, Nvidia CK804 (for my hardware) -MIC ADC
4. Open Applications, Sound & Video, Sound Recorder
5. Record from input, Microphone
6. Record as, Voice, Lossless (.wav type) or any that suits.
7. Click the red record button
Result: "Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' audio profile. Please verify its settings.
You may be missing the necessary plug-ins", message
Expected was no message but the time of recording showing until I clicked stop.
To not have the message appear:.
1. Close Sound Recorder
2. In Multimedia Systems Selector
3. Default input, Device, Default
4. Close Multimedia Systems Selector
5. Open Sound Recorder.
6. Record from Input microphone
7, Record as, Voice, lossless (.wav type) or any that suits.
8. Click the record button
Result: the error message does not appear and the time of recording advances until you click on stop.
Since I found how to exactly make this repeatable can I reopen this bug. or if I have not got the permissions could someone please open it.

I can confirm these steps in Lucid. It would appear selecting the NVidia device would make sense, but it results in this error message. What is odd is that if I set it as 'default' it will then go through the motions of 'recording' but when it's done I get an error and nothing is played back (This issue is reported in other bugs).

I encountered this error attempting to get a valid input device for recording, this was encountered along the way. I fixed it by reinstalling pulseaudio.
