Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

This bug will also not let you edit a software source (like changing one from quantal to precise).

Correct! I've got the same problem with an older software that's still on PPA and must be added under maverick. I have to remove the entry in Software Updater and create from scratch. The change is just not permanent.
Very, very buggy.

Ah, what is this: (tried to run $ software-updater-gtk --massive-debug )

ERROR:dbus.proxies:Introspect error on :1.82:/: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

May explain why it takes up to 30 seconds until my machine reacts again after clicking 'OK' in SU.

Editing a ppa in Utopic presents a crash report occasionally. Removing and adding work perfectly.
