Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

We could use the license information to celebrate open source more. This could be done as a special 'badge' that the open source apps get to display or simply by stating that an app is Free and Open Source rather than just free.

This requires a little bit of thought and discussion but I suggest that this information could be made to work harder and more usefully.

It will help to at least state the exact license of software instead of just "Open Source" and link to appropriate text in default search engine.

anatoly, I'm designing this in tandem with bug 435183, which is about specifying the open source licenses in greater detail.

For highlighting open source licenses vs. proprietary, I'm thinking of using a miniature of the OSI symbol <http://opensource.org/logo-usage-guidelines#The_Symbol> next to the "Open source" label. <http://opensource.org/trademark-guidelines#Usage_That_Does_Not_Require_Permission>
