Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Package managers include apt and aptitude in the terminal, as well as the Software Center, and Synaptic. Only one of these can be running at a time, so please confirm whether or not you have more than one of these open. Can you also please let us know when you are encountering the dpkg error?

Does running 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' in a terminal resolve the issue for you?

I have not been able to solve my problem by downloading the free
software Based on the advice I received. Therefore I have installed
Ubuntu again and now there are no problems downloading the free
software and updates Ubuntu. I do not know what has been wrong in the
first installation but now everything works as it should. Thank you
for your help.

Is there anybody else with this bug that can confirm whether or not running 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' resolves the issue? If not, then this report will be closed since there is not enough information and there is no way for the original reporter to provide extra information.

My computer have the bug too. I thought maybe some other programs were running, though I cannot figure them out. So I just restart restart and restart. It didn't work. Then I ran " sudo dpkg --configure -a ".It didn't work too! (I forgot what it said after I ran this command. I will tell you next time it comes out again.) So the only thing I can do is to do something else and wait. Guess what? It worked!

I have had this very same problem today while installing ISO master via software center, i ran the command as suggested, and received
 "Setting up liblzma0 (4.999.8beta-0ubuntu2) ...

Processing triggers for libc-bin ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place"

and hey presto download instantly began, thanks, and i hope this helps

Can any one please confirm if this still happens with fully updated Lucid. Sure its not genuinely a software center bug though. Should we close this if its not a problem anymore.?

Hi there. I also affected by the same problem. I am doing the " sudo dpkg --configure -a ". It gave me that it is installing MS fonts. By trying to copy the text while it was busy (Ctrl + C) the process stopped and it started to download the program in Software Centre. Hope it helps in to maybe find what was wrong. Thanks for given great support.
