Experiencing in Ubuntu 12.10 [Quantal] as well . Perhaps it is related to the fact that 'Quantal Package List Contains Sources That Cannot Be Downloaded' (Bug #1003042 refers: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1003042). Basically when you use APTITUDE to to a similar thing you get:

W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Unfortunately, we cant use Ubuntu-bug to report the error because it doesn't stay active long enough to capture the PID. I simply opens, thinks for a second, and then closes gracefully.

summary: - Ubuntu Software Center does not load

Hi Jose, and thanks for your report. To help us to identify the issue that you are encountering we will need some additional info. Could you please open a terminal and launch Software Center from there as shown?:

  $ software-center

And then paste any output the you see in the terminal into this bug.

Many thanks for your help!

Hi SlugiusRex, and thanks for your comment and info. In fact, those "Failed to fetch" messages are benign and are due to the fact that we do not have any packages yet in the "extras" repository in Quantal. This situation should be rectified soon, but meanwhile, you needn't concern yourself with those warnings.

If you are having the problem with Software Center crashing on start, please follow my instructions in comment #4 above so that we can hopefully see exactly what the issue is.

Many thanks for your help!
Gary

Hi again SlugiusRex, and thanks for getting back to quickly with the traceback. This is actually a known bug in Quantal, bug 1000238, and so I will mark this bug as a duplicate of that one. Note that we have a fix commited for this, and it should be released very soon as part of the next development release of Software Center in Quantal.

Please add any additional information to that bug, and track it for the status of the fix.

Thanks again! Best regards,
Gary
