I got this error and the modem is not working at all. However if I am using smstools_

Experienced same problem. According to the package website, versions prior to 3.1.9 are broken om 64-bit platforms due to relying on un-documented behaviour of the libc strcpy(). Package should probably be upgraded to 3.1.9.
