Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Clarified the bug title: there is only one skype package now, the i386 one, which is the one that will be installed including on amd64 systems (via multiarch). This package needs to depend on (or recommend) sni-qt, to pull in the 32-bit version of that plugin when installing on amd64.

This will be a no-op for i386 users, where sni-qt is already pulled in by default as part of the ubuntu desktop.

I come from bug 845173 (duplicate of this bug)

and I miss the skype icon on systray.

I have i386 arch and sni-qt installed, my systray whitelist is the following
 giovanni@whale:~$ gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Wine', 'scp-dbus-service', 'Update-notifier']

Should skype to be added to the whitelist to have the icon on systray?

Even with this package I still see the icon intermittently. After upgrading to 2.2.0.35-0oneiric2 which pulls sni-qt I still do not see an icon. The process below (my workaround) also no longer functions consistently.

1) killing skype process
2) relaunching from unity search bar

After about four or five attempts I now have an icon showing my online status, however both left click and right click only pull up the skype system tray menu, rather than the contact list window which used to appear on left click. There is also a blank menu item at the top of the skype system tray menu that makes the contact list appear.

This is fixed for me with last update, my comment #6 was wrong 'cause skype icon disapperaed after a while.
Now it seems ok for me

@iMac You may need to upgrade to sni-qt 0.2.4, the problem you described should be fixed with this version.

This is very odd. Regarding the blank menu entry, can we continue the
discussion on this bug?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/849673

Regarding left-click not showing the contact list: this is a conscious
design decision. The idea being that appindicators behave like items in
the panel menubar.

Today I am on 0.2.5 and my skype has been consistent across two reboots. I can't be sure, but perhaps a reboot was required after the 0.2.4 upgrade in addition to the upgrade.

like the duplicate https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/skype/+bug/845173 .. can we un-dupe this one for the missing icon?

Since the sni update it has gone from missing 90% of the time to 5% of the time.

It's not exactly the same issue: #845173 reporter never got his Skype icon because he was missing sni-qt:i386. But if you don't feel like filing a new bug, please un-dupe it. Before you do so, be sure to test with a version of Qt >= 4.7.4-0ubuntu5 as it contains a fix for hp-systray which could very well be the cause of your problem.

okay, I'll do exactly that and re-file if it reappears after the update. thanks
