files on a shared (smb) device remain in "missing files" even when device becomes available again

Do the photos remain in the Missing view even after you restart Shotwell?

Yes, I've tried to restart Shotwell after opening shared folder in nautilus but the photos remain in "missing files".

Just to be sure we're not dealing with caching and so forth, if you double-click on the networked photo in Nautilus, does it appear in EoG (or whatever viewer you have configured)? After doing that, restart Shotwell. Does it still appear as a Missing File?

I know this seems redundant, but it helps to remove certain ambiguities so we can reproduce it here.

Hi Jim, don't worry about questions and suggestions, i know bug investigation is a hard job! ;-)
I've done what you suggested and nothing has changed, pictures still remain in missing files.

We'll try and reproduce this here and see what's going on. We've had other people report problems when their photos are across a network. This is something we need to investigate further.

A few more questions:

* What platform is the server (Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10, Mac Snow Leopard, etc.)?

* Do you auto-mount the server share or are you mounting it via Nautilus when you log in?

* What permissions do you have on the share (read-only, read-write, guest)?

* Is the network share your Shotwell library (i.e. is it the directory in Shotwell's Preferences dialog)?

2. The server is mounted via Nautilus, by the way i agree with your idea to mount the share via /etc/fstab, just to give it a chance let me try and i'll let you know

It works!
- mounted shared volume via fstab
- updated rows in table phototable chaning old path with new path (instead of reimporting photos that will take a loooong time ;-))
- started shotwell

All missed files now are back!

I know it is not the bug resolution, but i'm happy to have my photos back in shotwell...

I've discovered a bug that's suspiciously similar to this one. I've ticketed it at http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2857

I can confirm the same behaviour with Shotwell 0.10.1 running on Ubuntu 11.04 and accessing its library via a Samba share on a server running 11.10. The machines are connected via gigabit Ethernet.

In the past I may have started Shotwell when the SMB share was unavailable, so I'm not surprised to see some files in "missing files", but on running Shotwell with everything mounted, there are still some 100 photos in Missing files. I'm able to find them all in Nautilus by hand.

Further info, the share is mounted in fstab with RW permissions and as mentioned before, is the location that Shotwell's library is in.
