scim-setup isn't HIG compliant

Bug #3635 reported by David Mandelberg

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
scim (Ubuntu)
Confirmed

Bug Description

Scim-setup doesn't follow the GNOME HIG. It has an "are you sure" dialog on quit and doesn't apply preferences immediately. Also, I think it should set a window hint to make it not have the maximize button and make it look like other preference progs.

* it has a Quit and an OK button -- what is the difference between these?
* they are in the wrong order
* I am pointlessly asked for quit confirmation
* the buttons are the wrong width
* missing help

It is very much a example of never having seen the HIG.

Tree menu sidebar with only one item in second level(WHY?).

Borders for grouping options. Very windows like. But looks extremely out of place in GNOME.

This is quite serious as it seems to be included as default.
with ubuntu-desktop depending on 'scim'

Yes, with scim's inclusion in ubuntu-desktop for dapper, this bug becomes much more visible.

However it's obviously an upstream issue, and I don't have the expertise to rewrite the UI. If anyone can write a patch, though, I'll be very happy to test and forward it to upstream for discussion.

This can be confirmed, but it's not likely anyone in MOTU is working on it, so assign back to nobody.

Wow! This is probably the worst designed application included in the default installation.

Can we at least let the SCIM devs know that this scim-setup app looks bad? They won't do anything about it if they don't know there's a problem. I don't know where the project lives, but can we file a bug with them for this issue?

This definitely is the least HIG-compliant app I've ever seen. It makes me hurt on the inside to look at that tree thing on the left :'(

The SCIM project is hosted on SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/scim

Note the mailing list only accepts mails from subscribers. The bug tracker should work, and the forum-to-mailing-list gateway should work too (but I never tried).
