Maybe the workaround (setting mapping to 'us') is not the ideal solution for the problem. What I like to see is that grdc is working for most of the people without changing anything. Defaulting to GNOME settings is indeed good.
But it seems like this default (GNOME setting), is not working good for grdc, hence the workaround. On my system 'us' is set for GNOME, hence this setting is not adapted right.
If this is the case, I'll adapt the title to something like:
"Default key mapping (derived from GNOME setting) in grdc does not work"
