recode should be more verbose

Bug Description
Binary package hint: recode
$ LC_ALL=C recode -v mac..latin9 file
Request: macintosh/
Shrunk to: macintosh/
Recoding file... failed: Invalid input in step `macintosh.
1/ I don't see what is invalid in my file...
2/ recode should be able to tell me which character or line has a problem. I read all the options list and there doesn't seem to be something like this.
