Bug Description
Release 12.04 (precise) 64-bit
Currently installed python-gtk2-dev 2.24.0- 3
Trying to install dependencies for matplotlib using sudo apt-get build-dep python-matplotlib.
I expected a clean install, no errors. Instead this came up as an error.

I had the same problem.
The problem was that I've added alternative for python and pyversions does not followed both symbolic link.
To check this please run:
pyversions --default
python -V
file /usr/bin/python
