USB headset mic not picked when I plug headset in

Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Whenever I plugged in my old audio jack headset, sound was immediately diverted from my speakers to the headset speakers, and the microphone was immediately available.

When I plug in my new USB headset, I have to open Sound Preferences and switch both input to the headset. (Output is selected automatically, but I'm not sure if the first time it wasn't.)

Aparrently this is a bug, not a configuration problem on my side. This may be a duplicate of or related to the following bugs - but none of these bugs described my specific issue (USB headset mic is not automatically picked):
 * https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/491055
 * https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/443306

 * http://askubuntu.com/questions/21472/how-can-i-automatically-switch-to-usb-headset-when-plugged-in

I'm using a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi laptop, Maverick and a Logitech H330 USB headset.

I can't figure out how to link this to both pulseaudio and gnome-media, so that someone else can decide which it actually is.

affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) → gnome-media (Ubuntu)

I have a similar situation with my Motorola H270 bluetooth headset. The desired effect is that, when I turned it on and pulseaudio automatically recognizes it as an input/output option, it switches to it so that I don't have to go into sound settings and manually change it.

Confirming since there are comments to that effect. I can also see it's not selected by default, although it's hard to say when the default should be changed when an USB audio device is connected, and when it shouldn't... For instance, I agree for the USB headset cases, but I'm not certain I'd want my USB webcam to be selected as default automatically when I unplug it and re-plug it.

Changed in gnome-media (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

seems it would be rather a pulseaudio issue, gnome-media is only a configuration dialog, not a service running

Changed in gnome-media (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu) → pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

Additional info: sometimes the device is not recognised properly: only the input device appears or only the output device appears. I still have to select the device, but I can only select the available part. I'm not sure if this is related, or a separate bug. If there is anything I can do to provide more info when it happens again, please let me know.

There is a Blog Message that can help:

If it doesn't work and your login is more than 7 letters long, adjust the format-option in the line 62 from "ps axc -o user,command" to "ps axc -o user:XXX,command", where XXX is the length of your login+1

Same issue for my Logitech USB headset. The problem appeared in 14.04 LTS. Before that release the feature worked by accident or by specification :-)

Now, after plugging in USB headset to answer skype, I have to go to audio preference and change 2 settings for Audio Input / recording devices and for playback devices. See attached pictures.

Regards, Alex
