Problem exists for me as well on Powertop versions 1.12 and 1.13. It does not exist for Powertop version 1.11.

I am running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 on a System76 Starling 4.

Linux star4 2.6.32-28-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 21:21:01 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

FYI, if you want to revert to 1.11, download it from here:
http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/powertop/download.php

You probably will have to install these dependencies:
sudo aptitude install libncurses5-dev
sudo aptitude install libncursesw5-dev
sudo aptitude install gettext

Then, follow the instructions on the above web page to make and install, but do "sudo make install" instead of "make install".

Argh. I spoke too soon. Powertop 1.11 monitors for 5 seconds, displays the results, and then there is a segmentation fault. So, it gets further, but it also crashes. At least it doesn't take the whole system down with it. ;)

I do have the same problem:
powertop stalls the machine only when launched with sudo.
I have a lenovo thinkpad T410s (with nvidia graphics card) using ubuntu 11.4 and kernel 2.6.38-11-generic.
Version of powertop is 1.13.
Module thinkpad_acpi is loaded.
