Bug Description

Binary package hint: postgresql-8.1

When carrying out a new install of postgres-8.1 on new install of Edgy on a Dell d400, received above error.

More info as follows:
invoke-rc.d: initscript postgresql-8.1, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing postgresql-8.1 (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Issue similar to Debian Bug#393945:

Will try suggested change to /etc/hosts

Looks good, added localhost to first line of /etc/hosts, e.g.

127.0.0.1 www.mydomain.com localhost

Wontfix for now, since it is nontrivial to fix and not being able to resolve 'localhost' is really a corner case and will lead to other trouble as well, anyway.

Closing the 8.1 task, Feisty only supports 8.2 and we won't fix this in stables.

My solution was modify /var/lib/postgresql/8.3/data/postgresql.conf

Set listen_addresses in postgresql.conf to *.
listen_addresses = '*' # what IP address(es) to listen on;
