Desktop icons do not appear at login and do not get updated on delete

Layout of desktop is Folder->Desktop
After login, no icons are ahown on the desktop; need to do a refresh from the desktop menu.
When I delete an icon the icon is not removed (the file is!) and I also need to refresh to make the icon disappear.
Moving icon from desktop to folder in dolphin moves file and makes icon disappear, though, that works as expected.
