Bug Description

I've been using Kubuntu 16.04 since it was released, and have been using Amarok to play MP3s without any issues, until yesterday. After installing some updates:

Amarok can no longer play MP3 files. I ran Amarok with the --debug command-line argument, and this is what happens when I double-click a MP3 file in the playlist:

Calling appendChild() on a null node does nothing.

I can play Ogg files without any problems, as I realized when I deleted my Amarok configuration and restarted it -- the default playlist contains a sample track in Ogg format.

konsole crashes when using tab completion.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start konsole (project-neon5-konsole from the daily PPA)
2. Enter 'sudo aptit' then press the TAB key

Actual Results:
konsole crashes. Bug report window opens. The backtrace is deemed good, but the Send Report button is disabled.

Expected Results:
TAB completes the command so it is "sudo aptitude "

Interesting.

It looks like Phonon is configured with VLC backend, but VLC is based on Qt 4, and loading it into the ELF namespace of a Qt 5 based application will not work.

I am not sure whose "fault" it is (Phonon or VLC), but this certainly does not look like a Konsole issue. Reassigning to Phonon maintainers for inspection.

basically the initial cache on debian systems is busted making vlc try to load all plugins thus causing the symbol clash at runtime

FWIW I made a workaround in the neon5 packaging that should prevent this crash from happening (or so was the idea anyway, will know more next week).

Additionally I proposed a long term fixed at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=755154 which should also hit Kubuntu 14.10 before release, solving the issue once and for all.

In OpenSuSE 13.1 with VLC 2.15 from Packman the command:

/usr/lib64/vlc/vlc-cache-gen -f /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins

doesn't work, it shows the error: Segmentation fault.

And the problem happens again.

Indeed, it seems that's an issue with phonon VLC backend.
I've just removed the phonon vlc package (I'm currently testing Kubuntu 15.04) and no more crashes… I had a lot of crashes before with polkit-kde (bug #344106 ), konsole (as describe in this bug report), plasma, and systemsettings…

I was unable to get Amarok working again by manually downgrading gstreamer packages, so I resorted to reverting my entire root filesystem to a previous btrfs snapshot.

Are you sure you have the gstreamer plugins installed for your gstreamer version? Since you need the 1.x versions, make sure your plugins are also for that version, the 0.10.x versions will not work.
FWIW: this is not an Amarok bug, but an installation mismatch of the gstreamer plugins.

Thanks for the attention. I wasn't sure at all which package I should choose, and Amarok seemed like a decent guess. I don't have a Phonon VLC backend installed at all; only the gstreamer backend.

The gstreamer package versions I have installed are shown in the apt log; the following versions allow Amarok to play MP3s, and were installed on my system prior to that 'apt full-upgrade' run:

gstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 1.8.2-1~ubuntu1
gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.2
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:amd64 1.8.2-1ubuntu0.3

Those were upgraded to the following versions, some combination of which breaks Amarok:

I haven't been able to narrow down exactly which of these 8 packages is/are responsible. I also have gstreamer 0.10.x packages installed, and I think those might have been pulled in by Steam, but none of those were upgraded as part of this 'apt full-upgrade' run.

Did you check the upstream bug? This is easy to solve...
As a reminder: Amarok is not responsible for the Phonon backends, nor are we in any way responsible for gstreamer plugins.
You have a mismatch of plugins installed, please make sure you have only one gstreamer library version and the appropriate plugins for restricted codecs (which is the case for MP3), the mix is what causes the problem.
