Bug Description

after the update on 21/9/19 of pulseaudio to 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.10 I get no sound and when killing the demon it restarts with the following error - [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed. Reboot does not restore sound.

Thanks. I think the relevant update was:

Start-Date: 2019-09-21 17:34:40
Commandline: apt install paprefs
Requested-By: david (1000)
Install: gnome-icon-theme:amd64 (3.12.0-1ubuntu3, automatic), paprefs:amd64 (0.9.10-2), pulseaudio-module-zeroconf:amd64 (1:8.0-0ubuntu3.10, automatic), libglademm-2.4-1v5:amd64 (2.6.7-5, automatic), libgtkmm-2.4-1v5:amd64 (1:2.24.4-2, automatic), pulseaudio-module-gconf:amd64 (1:8.0-0ubuntu3.10, automatic), libgconfmm-2.6-1v5:amd64 (2.28.3-0ubuntu3, automatic)
End-Date: 2019-09-21 17:34:48

That wasn't a system update really. It looks like you installed something like 'paprefs' manually, which might then automatically install 'pulseaudio-module-gconf' and 'pulseaudio-module-zeroconf'.

I don't really know if any of those are broken or just not configured correctly, but it sounds like you just need to uninstall them:

sudo apt remove paprefs pulseaudio-module-zeroconf pulseaudio-module-gconf

or something like that.

summary: - Pulseaudio broken after update
+ Pulseaudio broken after installing 'paprefs'
affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) → paprefs (Ubuntu)
Changed in paprefs (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → New

Hi Daniel - removed those packages - after the problem I did install
paprefs to see if I could use to see the configuration of pulseaudio and
see if anything wrong - was no help.

Still get this
david@david-desktop:~$ pulseaudio -k
david@david-desktop:~$ pulseaudio -v
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation
not permitted
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation
not permitted
I: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Successfully gained nice level -11.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: This is PulseAudio 8.0
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Page size is 4096 bytes
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Machine ID is 427e6f43267740cea72726e16c53a1cc.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Session ID is c2.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Using runtime directory /run/user/1000/pulse.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Using state directory /home/david/.config/pulse.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Using modules directory /usr/lib/pulse-8.0/modules.
I: [pulseaudio] main.c: Running in system mode: no
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

I do get a brief sound output during boot - the startup sound then it dies

cheers

OK, keep those files removed.

The issue of 'pa_pid_file_create() failed' looks like a stale .pid somewhere. Either from a previous session or from root if somehow you've configured a separate instance for daemon mode.

First please try removing your local config:

  rm -rf ~/.config/pulse

and then reboot.

If it still doesn't work then you need to look for files ending in 'pid', probably under /var/

no change - found a pid in var/run/user/1000/pulse contains value 2299
