Bug Description

Binary package hint: p7zip

I use 7-Zip 4.42 under Windows 2000 to create a password protected .7z archiv. I use the default settings and include just one simple textfile. I transfer this archive to a machine with ubuntu feisty fawn. After that i try to decompress that file

This happens also, wenn i use the current version 7-Zip 4.48 beta under Windows. Extracting unprotected .7z archives works like a charm...

If you use the 7z command rather than p7zip, it works fine.
Try: 7z x file.7z

You are right. But this makes me think. Why are there two p7zip packages?

---
Package p7zip
    * feisty (utils): 7-Zip is a file archiver with high compression ratio [universe]
      4.43~dfsg.1-1: amd64 i386 powerpc

Package p7zip-full
    * feisty (utils): 7-Zip is a file archiver with high compression ratio [universe]
      4.43~dfsg.1-1: amd64 i386 powerpc
---

p7zip doesn't contain 7z, this binary is only in p7zip-full Wouldn't it be better to have only one package which only extracts .7z files?

I think p7zip is supposed to be simplified (like gzip but simplet) ie it jsut compesses and decompresses single files, whereas 7z can do more.

I should have mentioned, that is output when using file-roller. If I use 7z or 7za it works fine. It does not work for 7zr.

This is NOT a bug...

To open password protected .7z files , you need to install *p7zip-full package* ...
Then double clicking the file ,opens the file via file roller with a dialogue to enter the password.

When this bug was filed (almost 2 years ago), I don't believe that particular package existed yet, and if it did it had this issue at the time. I'll have to double check and verify if it was ever fixed, if so then "closed" would be the proper status, not "invalid".

Ok, I can confirm that this does work now. But, it looks like I need to make a new bug for File Roller still not prompting for a password :/

Please note the invalid is ONLY for the papercuts project.

Opening the file after installing p7zip-full prompted me for the password.

Maybe the error message could be made clearer for the user?

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10.

Maybe the latest p7zip version 9.20.1 could do it better, but it is not packaged yet.

Well, it actually is a bug.

The bug is that if you doubleclick the file, file-roller will then offer to install p7zip only -- which then will fail to open the archive. If someone can change it to offer p7zip-full instead then this can finally be closed.
